Bond is back …or is he?!

October 31, 2008

Well, as a rather privileged cinema employee, I managed to sneak myself a preview showing of the new Bond flick Quantum of Solace. I sat, equipped with drink and popcorn, for a 2 hour thrill, but was sadly left lacking. The opening scenes are as good as you would expect of the latest Bond adventure – fast cars, machine guns, explosions, hot lead in a suit.. – it indeed ticked the boxes, got the heart pumping and was visually stunning. Sadly, the rest of the film did not particularly follow this blaze of glory. Individual chase scenes were pretty good, but together, the film just did not quite sit right (not to mention the huge ripoff of the golden lady from Goldfinger, and the fact that Craig doesn’t once say “Bond, James Bond”)!

I was a huge Daniel Craig fan after Royale, but even he seemed to not have his heart completely in it this time around. It pains me to say it (as those who know me will know how much I wanted to like this film), but Quantum isn’t really worth the £6 or so it costs for the cinema, and it certainly wont be one I rush out for on DVD. My prediction in fact is that this will end up a bit of a flop, with a slating from the press. I really hope the team is ready for it. Even Sean Connery couldn’t have saved this one…

Oh, and as a side note, after watching the film, I still have no clue what’s going on with the title!!

James Bond: How long have I got?
Felix Leiter: Thirty seconds.
James Bond: That doesn’t give us a lot of time…
