It’s a sister thing…

June 30, 2009

So yesterday, I managed to see two films that I have been looking forward to for some time. The first of these was My Sister’s Keeper, closely followed (well actually a chicken sandwich by the river, a drive to Cardiff and an hour of shopping later…) by Sunshine Cleaning.

I’m not really sure what to say about My Sister’s Keeper to be honest. I liked it, but for me, it was just missing something (and not just the fact there was no mention of Julia!) that the book had. I understand more than a lot of people the constraints of a page to screen adaptation, but a big part of me withes they’d skipped over some of the minutes long meaningful glances and just added in Campbell’s Judge jokes, Jesse’s delinquency and (as mentioned above) Julia, who is supposed to be Anna’s guardian (not Campbell) for the trial and has the most interesting romantic subplot – and that’s before even mentioning that she also has a lesbian sister! lol! As a stand alone, the film isn’t all that bad. The acting is very good, especially from Sofia Vassilieva (Kate) and Cameron Diaz (Sara). It even made me shed a tear …I don’t think huge fans of the book will be overwhelmed with joy at the outcome however.

Sunshine Cleaning on the other hand was a revelation. From the makers (and half the B cast) of Little Miss Sunshine, this was about two sisters (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt) who, out of sheer desperation for money, start a crime scene clean up business. I know it sounds kind of random, but trust me, it’s actually quite a brilliant film. I don’t want to give too much about it away, but if you liked the humour and style of LMS, you will most definitely enjoy this one!

Anna: Want to hear our routine?
Sara: What routine?
Anna: [lowers voice, imitating a male] Hey baby, what’s your sign?
Kate: Cancer.
Anna: You’re a cancer?
Anna: No, I’m a Leo.
Anna & Kate: But I have cancer.

Lynn: How’d she die?
Norah: It was sorta a do-it-yourself thing…

Crash & Burn

June 26, 2009

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please to tame your wild wild heart
I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you
Its hard to find relief and people can be so cold
When darkness is upon your door and you feel like you cant take anymore

Let me be the one you call
If you jump Ill break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart

If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

When you feel all alone
And a loyal friend is hard to find
You’re caught in a one way street
With the monsters in your head
When hopes and dreams are far away and
You feel like you cant face the day

Let me be the one you call
If you jump Ill break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

And there has always been heartache and pain
And when its over you’ll breathe again
You’ll breath again

When you feel all alone
And the world has turned its back on you
Give me a moment please
To tame your wild wild heart

Let me be the one you call
If you jump Ill break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You’re not alone

Crush of the week!

June 23, 2009

So with the current Transformers 2 hype in the air, it would be oh so easy to pick Megan Fox as the crush of the week. I have decided however that this is too easy, and so am going to pay tribute to the other Transformers beauties! Turned out to be a bit of an ode to the Australians actually…

Tale of two houses…

June 17, 2009

There are two ‘house’ films that I happened to watch this week – Last House on the Left and Doghouse. One was a film full of family bonding time, while the other was enriched with cannibal man haters – what more could you want really from a Tuesday night?!

Okay so Last House on the Left was a strange one. The plot basically consists of these 3 crazy folk who rape and shoot this teenage daughter. Later that night, they find themselves sharing a house with the girls parents (yes, it did happen to be that last house on the left …how did you know?!), who then on finding out that these are the same 3 that attacked their daughter, proceed to kill them in a manner of brutal fashions. They even use a garbage disposal and a microwave as weapons of revenge – I kid you not! Overall, this film did have its good moments …if you manage to stay awake through the first half hour or so. Note: If you get seriously uncomfortable with rape scenes or some extreme violence – this really isn’t the film for you.

Next was the brilliantly funny Doghouse. This British horror/comedy was truly fantastic! The basic plot centres around this group of guys who all having women troubles and so decide on a little weekend away in the country. Unfortunately for them, this leads them to a isolated town where all the women have been infected with a man hating cannibal virus that gives all the lads a run for their money, and, well …their lives! This one is definitely worth a watch. Here’s the trailer for you to have a closer look –

Crush of the week!

June 13, 2009

So I’ve been very in to Grey’s Anatomy as of late which has resulted in a new crush of mine – Jessica Capshaw. She plays lesbian (not that that makes a difference *cough*) doctor Arizona Robbins, who starts dating Callie (my second Grey’s crush, following closely behind little Grey!) and is absolutely adorable. Adorable isn’t exactly a word I use often, but I just felt like cute wasn’t enough! Now interestingly enough I didn’t realise until today, but Capshaw was also in a few episodes of The L Word as Nadia, the student that has a little affair with Bette. Weirdly I didn’t particularly find her that hot back then, but now she’s drumming to a whole new beat or something because I’ve got it bad!!

And just because I’m feeling extra crushed out, here’s a little video as well! Plus, not only does it have Arizona, but also Callie and little Grey (Lexie) …just three small reasons to watch this show :p
